TECHNOLOGY Unwanted Browser Toolbars No doubt you’ve had one or two browser toolbars appear (seemingly), out of thin air when you’ve opened up a web browser on your computer. So, what are they, how has this occurred, and why? Toolbars typically inhabit the horizontal space below your browsers menu and address area, and include buttons, icons, and menus that give you an easy way to select features and extend the functionality of your browser. Most of these are designed for generating advertising revenue by hijacking your web browser in terms of Homepage and Search results. Some of the more pernicious toolbars, overlay adverts on ALL visited websites. Some common ways to obtain toolbars are through Oracle Java updates, and the installation of Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Player. These applications are safe to use, but Adobe bundles McAfee Security Scan Plus, Google Chrome and Google Toolbar with these installs. While Oracle Java updates like to install Search App by ASK, and the Yahoo Toolbar. Other ways toolbars can appear, are by installing commonly found free software, like: media players, video & audio convertors and codecs, and many more. These third-party applications often bundle ‘toolbar installations’ with them, so take care during installation and uncheck anything that is not to your liking. EDUCATION NEWS TV commercial puts Kingscliff TAFE Campus in the spotlight Students and teachers experienced a taste in the spotlight as Kingscliff TAFE Campus was transfor med into a film set for the production of the new North Coast TAFE television commercial. Sarah Menz, student of specialist makeup at Kingscliff TAFE, says she grabbed the opportunity to work alongside the Head Makeup artist Jacqui Deacon during the two day shoot. “Working on the commercial was quite intense at times, though thankfully Jacqui took me under her wing and showed me the ropes,” says Sarah. Jacqui Deacon was equally impressed by Sarah’s ability to think on her feet, take direction and use her initiative; attributes she said will ensure she goes a long way in this industry. Keep an eye out for the North Coast TAFE commercial which will air later this month. For more information on studying at North Coast TAFE please visit our website (www. northcoast.tafensw.edu.au) or call the customer service 1300 628233. Most toolbars have names you’ve never heard of like: MyWebSearch, Ask, Snap. do, Babylon, EliteUnzip, Delta, iLivid, Qvo6, Conduit, Mindspark Interactive, and the list goes on. If you’ve got some of these toolbars I’d get them removed. Got technical challenges and need help with your Computer, Tablet, or Smartphone?
