Artist captures sublime
in the Northern Rivers
landscape
Sandra Guy, talented
artist and Head Teacher
of Creative Industries and
Information Technology
at
Kingscliff
and
Murwillumbah TAFE, will
exhibit her works ‘Twothirds sky: searching for
the sublime’ at the Tweed Regional Gallery,
from the 19 June to 2 August.
Sandra says her exhibition is inspired by her
interest in ‘the sublime’; that awe inspiring
moment, which was ignited many years ago
on a field trip to Broken Hill, as part of her Master
of Art Degree at the college of Fine Arts.
“When I first moved to the Northern Rivers 9 years
ago to take up a role as Head Teacher with
North Coast TAFE, I was somewhat perplexed
by the rural environment, and struggled to find
the inspiration, which I previously had for the
natural environment around me,” says Sandra.
After taking some time to adjust Sandra says the
rural landscapes which she initially rejected as
subject matter for her artwork become familiar
, inspiring, intriguing and contrary to previous
thought- powerful and often ‘sublime’.
Within her paintings Sandra has captured
dramatic skies representing the ‘sublime’
that dominate a rural setting and feature
prominent road signs, which she says hints at
the sometimes uncomfortable marriage of the
natural and rural environment typical of the
Northern Rivers.
“Through these works I hope to elicit the
recognition of a sublime moment experienced,
an appreciation for the beauty or picturesque
nature of the Northern Rivers landscapes, and
the promotion of thought about further impact
to this environment.
