Christmas in Austria is a truly magical time
of the year. Small villages and larger towns
and cities erect wooden huts - usually in the
main square - and the local merchants offer
a variety of traditional food and sweets, hot
spicy wine and punch, toys, clothing and
souvenirs. The markets become a gathering
place for families to exchange season’s
greetings and wishes. Children play in the
snow, the air is thick with the aroma of incense,
candied fruits, mulled wine and voices and
music of carollers and trumpeters. It is truly a
festive time that one should experience at
least once in their lifetime.
Vienna, the capital, has a large market in
front of the Town Hall, while there are smaller,
more intimate markets in Freyung and
Spittelberg.
Salzburg, the Sound of Music city, also has
colourful markets in front of the Duomo and
in Residenzplatz. Innsbruck has its markets
in the main square under the Little Golden
Roof. Christmas markets can be found
in other Austrian destinations like Graz,
Klagenfurt, Villach, Lienz, Linz, Zell am see,
Kitzbuehel and many more.
