There is no doubting the increased interest
in cruising - whether it be the open ocean
or the romantic rivers of Europe or Asia.
Australians have not “missed the boat”
on cruise packages that have flooded
the market in the last few years. However,
potential cruisers should be aware of
what they are booking. Many ocean
cruise companies are going for bigger,
more elaborate “floating cities” - where
you are likely to be aboard with 3-4,000
other guests. You also need to find out if
you can handle the “open seas” before
putting money down on a 2-3-4 week
cruising adventure. If you get sea-sick
taking a bath - then open ocean cruising
is definitely not for you.
Alternatively, river cruising in Europe or
Asia can be a more relaxing option.
Rivers are much calmer that open seas;
the vessels are smaller - most only carrying
only 125-150 persons and make frequent
stops at places of interest along the way.
The most popular of these cruises is the
15-day Amsterdam to Budapest (or vice
versa); not too short, not too long, not
too many churches and cathedrals!
Definitely a more relaxed way of cruising.
Many of the cruise companies include
drinks with meals or even 24-hours. Most
have bicycles for use on-shore visits, and
all have onboard entertainment.
