CUMBRIAN WINDOW FIRM
FINED OVER SEVERED FINGERS
A Cumbrian manufacturer of
wooden doors and window
frames has been fined for safety
failings after an employee’s
fingers were severed by a rotating
saw.
The New West Port Corporation
Ltd, which trades as West Port,
was prosecuted by the Health and
Safety Executive (HSE) following
the incident at its factory on
the Solway Industrial Estate in
Maryport on 2nd March 2011.

West Cumbria Magistrates’
Court in Workington heard the
29-year-old local man had been
feeding long pieces of wood
through a machine so they could
be cut to size by circular saws.
He then put a piece of wood into
the machine’s exit so it could be
recalibrated for the next job when
his right hand was struck by one of
the blades, which was still rotating.
The worker lost parts of all four
fingers on his right hand and now

struggles to carry out everyday
tasks like shaving and cooking.
The HSE investigation found
there was no guard over the part
of the machine where the wood
came out from under the saw,
which meant it was possible for
workers to reach it while it was still
rotating.

THREE COUNTRIES GOLF
CHALLENGE SUCCESS
They had barely finished dusting off their climbing gear following the
successful completion of the National Three Peaks Challenge in June,
when adventurers from RegaLead and associated suppliers, customers
and trade press broke out their golfing equipment, keen for the next
challenge in aid of Help for Heroes. This came in early July, in the
form of the Three Countries Golf Challenge.

Far from being the leisurely round of golf or two in the sunshine that
some participants had hoped for, the challenge took place in just one day
and saw the team travel from Manchester to Scotland, then Wales, finally
travelling back to Manchester again, with the aim to arrive before closing
time, to complete 54 holes of golf across the three countries.
Guy Hubble, Joint Managing Director at RegaLead comments: “It was
a fantastic day and we really appreciate the support shown, both from
the players themselves, and everybody who was kind enough to donate.
We’d particularly like to thank Moffat Golf Club, Old Padeswood Golf
Club and Chorlton cum Hardy Golf Club for their hospitality. Close to
£10,000 will go to charity.”
