Taking Up the Challenge
»»Slough based
installer, Abbey Windows
recently teamed up with one of
the UK’s largest trade fabricators,
Astraseal to complete an unusual
project at a property on the River
Thames formerly owned by rock
star Elton John’s mother.
The client requested a
replica of the traditional style
summerhouse which had
previously stood on the grounds
of the property, with the
intention of upgrading the new
structure to a modern material
but still keeping in line with the
original appearance.
Abbey Windows worked closely
with its supplier Astraseal to bring
the project to fruition, installing
a white aluminium glazed
summerhouse with two sets of
French doors and solid panel
rear. A grey Global aluminium
roof was then fitted, which
featured thermally efficient solid
aluminium panels.
Perry Davis, director at Abbey
Windows, comments: “Not many
companies would know where to
start with a project like this, but
thanks to our partnership with
Astraseal, we were able to draw-up
plans and offer a solution. We’ve
bought from Astraseal for the past
20 years and what we like about
them is how they never shy away
from a challenge. The finished
project is very impressive, offering
great views out onto the river, and
the client is delighted.”
Zac Nedimovic, marketing
manager of Astraseal,
commented: “The Abbey
Windows project is a perfect
example of how Astraseal
can help installers tackle the
most unusual conservatory
installations.”

LABC approval secured
Synseal’s recently-launched Celsius
Solid Roof system is now fully approved
and registered by the LABC (Local
Authority Building Control) under
certificate number EW550.
»»Construction of a
completely new structure or
replacement of an existing
conservatory roof with a solid
roof will involve a statutory
obligation to submit a Building
Regulations application.
The LABC is a not-for-profit
membership organisation that
represents all local authority
building control teams in England
and Wales, aiming to ensure that
all buildings are habitable, dry,
safe and warm.
Celsius Solid Roof has also
been submitted for approval by
the LABSS (Local Authority
Building Standards Scotland) who
are currently assessing the system
under the Scottish Building
Regulations.
With four million conservatories
installed in England alone
identified by a survey carried
out on behalf of the DECC
(Department of Energy & Climate
Change), the market opportunity
for retrofitting these building
extensions is extensive and the
fast-fitting Celsius Solid Roof has
been carefully designed with an
all-timber core construction to
provide a truly warm yet relatively
lightweight structure that will not
unduly stress existing conservatory
window walling structures and
foundations.
“We know that submitting a
Building Regulations application
can seem a little daunting for busy
roofing installers,” comments
Neville Gleed, Synseal’s Roofing
Technical Manager, “so Synseal
has partnered with the LABC and
ASW Consultants to give two ways
of making this process easier.”
