KEEPING GLASS PRODUCTION RUNNING
»»The chance of unplanned
downtime and accidents in the glass
manufacturing industry has been cut with
new wire rope scanning technology from
SCX.
Lifting equipment plays a crucial role
throughout the glass manufacturing
process and requires maximum efficiency
and durability whilst operating in arduous
conditions. Faulty equipment could lead to
operational downtime, injuries or far worse.
Advanced crane diagnostics from SCX
could reduce the chance of unplanned
downtime and accidents resulting from
defective lifting equipment used in glass
manufacturing.
Until now it has been impossible to see
inside a crane’s wire ropes without cutting
through and permanently destroying them
– which is clearly not a viable option. With
glass being a fragile product and the industry
recognised as hazardous in many of its
processes, it is vital to ensure all aspects of
glass production are safe and reliable.
The new Wire Rope NDT (NonDestructive Testing) service uses magnetic
flux technology to enable a full cross-section
inspection of the whole length of a crane’s wire
ropes – thus identifying a problem in time to
take preventative action.
Ray Fletcher, Director of Street CraneXpress
(SCX) said: “We have already worked with
some glass manufacturers to prevent a
potential problem after NDT scans revealed
unexpected deterioration. They require their
glass products to be handled in safe and
efficient way that does not cause strain on
their distribution system. With more than
40 years experience in operating Planned
Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programmes
for cranes within this industry, we know
exactly what is required.”
Ray emphasizes that early diagnosis
is especially important in the glass
manufacturing industry as equipment
deteriorates much faster because of the crane’s
continuous usage – and because unplanned
downtime can be so expensive.
