7THINGS ...

7 things you didn ’ t know about … Liniar

1 . IT ’ S STEEPED IN LOCAL HISTORY
The site in Derbyshire where the Liniar factory is located used to be the Denby Hall Colliery . At its peak , the mine had 545 employees underground and 204 above . The mine later became a huge opencast site before closing in 1999 . Construction began on Liniar HQ in 2006 and all operations relocated to the current premises a year later .
The colliery indirectly led to a major invention . In 1901 , at the former nearby Denby Railway , a spillage of tar had been covered with iron foundry slag - accidentally forming a hardwearing surface . Nottingham county surveyor Edgar Purnell Hooley recognised its potential and obtained a British patent to produce what he went on to call Tarmac . The rest , as they say , is history …
2 . GOING UNDERGROUND … The building that houses the Liniar extrusion plant was specially designed with three deep underground chambers .
As heated PVCu is pushed through extrusion machines , it needs to be cooled quickly to keep its shape . A continuous stream of cold water circulates around each line – which is fed from water chambers underneath the concrete floor .
These chambers were specifically designed to keep the water for the extrusion process under constant control . The underground location prevents any contamination and means no freezing during the winter months – and the chambers help Liniar to recycle approximately 5 billion gallons of water every year !
3 . IT ’ S THE FASTEST GROWING SYSTEM
Liniar can proudly claim to be the fastest growing PVCu systems house since its launch just 9 years ago . It ’ s now the fifth largest PVCu extruder in the UK , with 32,000 tonnes output in 2016 , and has the biggest PVCu mixing plant in Europe .
According to the latest D & G Consulting report , Liniar has 11.5 % share of the UK market , and is the only systems house to have consistently grown both output and market share over the last 3 years without any mergers or acquisitions .
A new warehouse and showroom is due to open in 2017 , adding another 178,000 ft ² to the Liniar plant ’ s enormous footprint and allowing for even more growth .
