GGFNEWS DON’T PLAY RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH ASBESTOS »»THE GLASS AND GLAZING Federation (GGF) has launched a new consumer guide to help homeowners understand the dangers of asbestos and the importance of ensuring it is removed professionally and safely. If poorly managed, asbestos removal can leave householders and those removing asbestos materials with serious health problems. This new brochure aims to inform homeowners on the facts, risks and correct procedures of dealing with asbestos. Phil Pinnington, GGF Health, Safety and Facilities Manager, commented, ‘This guide should raise the awareness that asbestos is often present in domestic settings. By improving awareness, we hope homeowners will be better informed as to why professional companies such as those in GGF Membership are well placed to help manage its control and disposal if necessary.” If asbestos is suspected and work is being carried out that could disturb the material, the GGF advises homeowners to seek advice from a competent assessor. Though the GGF cannot be directly responsible for promoting or authorizing the work of individual assessors, it does recommend that property owners discuss the matter with their window, door or conservatory installation company. This publication is available from the GGF’s consumer website MyGlazing.com Consumer code gains trading standards approval »»THE GGF IS DELIGHTED TO announce that its revised Consumer Code of Practice, issued last year, has gained full approval from the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) under its Consumer Codes Approval Scheme. The content of the Code was, in previous years, agreed with The Office of Fair Trading but last year the GGF issued its new Consumer Code of Practice to its Member companies, to take account of all new consumer legislation over the past two years and to enhance the consumer protection given by Members. The new Code was launched in September 2015 and distributed to GGF Members, along with GGF Guidance on dealing with vulnerable consumers and the latest version of the Rules of the GGF. Brian Smith, GGF Director of Home Improvement and main driver of the project, commented, “This Chartered Trading Standards Institute approval is the result of two years’ excellent work by the GGF Consumer Code project team. We expect the CTSI approval to enhance the offering by our Member companies to their customers and subsequently contribute to their sales growth. Members will now be able to display the CTSI approved code logo to demonstrate to consumers that they comply with our Code.” www.ggf.org.uk FIRE RESISTANT GLAZING VIDEO »»THE GLASS AND GLAZING Federation (GGF) has published a new online video, “Fire Resistant Glazing - Getting It Right vs. Getting It Wrong’. The video is now available to view online on the GGF website and visually shows the effects of why Fire Resistant Glazing should be used and, just as importantly, why it should be installed correctly. Fire-resistant glass has been designed to protect lives and prevent fire damage to property and should be an important part of any building where there is a fire safety risk. Getting the specification and installation right is critical. Fire easily exposes any weaknesses. 26 » JUN 2016 » CL EARVI E W- UK . C O M And risks simply must not be taken - as this new GGF video shows. Kevin Hulin, Chairman of the GGF Fire Resistant Glazing Group, commented, “The new video clearly demonstrates the potentially catastrophic effect when normal glazing is used instead of fire resistant glazing as part of a building’s fire prevention strategy. Fire resistant glazing systems that have been fire tested and third party accredited, provide cost effective protection for people’s safety and for buildings in the event of a fire breaking out.” You can watch the video at http://www. ggf.org.uk/groups/fire-resistant-glazing-group/ video www.ggf.org.uk
