The Thames Journey
Aluminium authoritative body, the Council for Aluminium in Building
(CAB) decided to celebrate its 21st Anniversary and 120 years of
the use of aluminium in the construction of architecture.
»»The Symphony sailed from
Embankment Pier with over 230 leading
architects, engineers and CAB members and
guests on board.
The aim of the journey was to highlight
the long tradition of the use of aluminium
in architecture. The compere for the evening
was Professor Michael Stacey, Chair in
Architecture, The Nottingham School of
Architecture, The University of Nottingham
and Michael Stacey Architects.
Julia Barfield and David Marks described
how they designed the London Eye, a project
they invented. Originally, a temporary
celebration of the millennium, the London
Eye is now a permanent landmark on
London’s skyline and is visited by four
million people annually.
Many of the Thameside projects discussed
were based on existing buildings, which have
been restored sympathetically yet enhance
but well designed new elements, including
Giles Gilbert Scotts two power stations
