7THINGS... 7 Things You Didn’t Know About… Yale You will no doubt be familiar with the yellow circle that represents Yale… But here are seven things you may not know about the leader in home security solutions. 3. SUPERIOR SERVICE 1. IN THE BEGINNING Yale has its roots in America where it was established in 1847 by Linus Yale Jr. in Newport, New York. Yale Jr. was experimenting with a lock based on a mechanism first employed by the ancient Egyptians over 4,000 years ago, and this was how he came to invent the famous pin tumbler mechanism, which is still used extensively in the security industry today. The Yale DWS sales team has a combined 278 years industry service – that’s over a quarter of a millennium! The longest serving area sales manager, Andy Evans, has worked at Yale for 14 years. 4. SWEDISH SUBSIDIARY In August 2000, Yale was bought by the ASSA ABLOY Group, a Swedish company formed in 1994. ASSA ABLOY has 46,000 employees globally and produces 10% of the world’s security solutions. 2. MARKET LEADING 5. GLOBETROTTING Yale is what’s referred to as a ‘generic trademark’, where a brand name has become synonymous with a product. Nightlatches are often referred to generically as ‘Yale locks’ even if they are manufactured by another brand. Yale is a super brand with products stocked in over 125 countries across the globe, from the Middle East to America, Africa to Europe. 34 » M AR 2017 » CL EARVI E W- UK . C O M
