T he Bad Gal Unleash the R e b e l  A dark lip might feel like an unexpected choice for spring, but designers such as Marchesa and Nicole Miller showed us a new perspective as their models graced the catwalks with deep plum lips for the Spring 2014 shows. While the relevance of the purple is obvious, I was most inspired by their choice of the darker shades in a season where bright orange lips seemed to dominate. Over the last year or so we have seen lipstick get progressively darker, beginning to resemble a cross between 90’s Goth and the original rebels of the 18th century: the 1920’s flapper girls. Being bad is the new black, and for those who want to flirt with rebellion, a dark lip is a great way to play, and carrying it into spring is even more daring. BEGINNERS If you are interested in experimenting with this look for the first time, I suggest a transition period. Start by playing around with darker shades of red; Guerlain The Lip Liner in Iris Noir #25 makes a fantastic base. When you are ready to take it a step further,  M.A.C. Burgundy Lip Pencil paired with M.A.C. Lipstick in Diva is a perfect first step beyond a dark red. THE BADDEST BABE Look no further then M.A.C. as a reliable source for the outrageous, hard to find color collections. When you are ready to go full force, M.A.C lip liner in Portside offers a creamy, comfortable, and smudge proof formula. Paired with M.A.C satin lipstick in Media you will find yourself turning heads in a way usually reserved for certain bad gal pop princesses. To make the look work for spring, pair it with nothing more then sun kissed shimmering skin and a bit of greasy black eyeliner. FASHIONABLY REBELLIOUS There are two directions to take your dark lip: either a burgundy (red/brown) or plum (purple/violet). There are many options to experiment with in both color families. Rebel by M.A.C is great for spring because it will blend down to a bright violet. Bite Beauty is a go-to for beautiful lip color. They offer a product called Cashmere Lip Cream in Burgundy, the perfect wine stain to nail the runway look.  Nars also offers an amazing range in their Pure Matte Lipstick collection. Try Terre De Feu or Valparaiso for non-drying, long-lasting lip perfection. For an affordable but efficient option, try the beautiful new Maybelline Espresso Exposed #955. Finding the perfect lip color often requires layering, and I usually complete the look by applying a hint of Maybelline Bean There #380. The hint of metallic shimmer plumps and illuminates the lips and gives the color a unique touch.
