THE INTERVIEW :

Getting to Know Dr . David Dorfman

This month we ’ re celebrating our premier Plastic Surgeon , Dr . David W . Dorfman . Dr . Dorfman , MD is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is also board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery .
For this issue , we had the chance to talk with Dr . Dorfman . Learn more about our plastic surgeon and the ever-evolving world of cosmetic surgery .
Please tell us about your background .
I was born in Santa Monica and grew up in Orange County . I have lived in California my whole life including my training years at the University of California-Los Angeles , University of California-San Francisco , University of California-Davis and Stanford University . I have been lucky enough to keep my roots in Southern California and raise my family here .
What / who inspired you to become a plastic surgeon ?
I was drawn to plastic surgery the first time I saw a cleft lip repair on an infant . I was inspired by the difference it made on a child ’ s life . I also loved the artistic aspect of the specialty , and was excited that I would have the opportunity to operate on every part of the body . Overall , I realized how much I could improve the quality of life of patients with plastic surgery .
What is the most difficult aspect about being a plastic surgeon ?
Every patient is different and presents a new challenge of trying to match the patient ’ s desires with what is surgically possible . It ’ s not feasible to make every patient fit a predefined aesthetically pleasing mold . Therefore , the same surgery on different patients will yield different results . However , this challenge is part of what makes my job so great . It ’ s really exciting to be able to come up with a patient-specific treatment plan to help each patient get their own outstanding result .
How has plastic surgery changed in the last 5 years ?
Innovative technology and treatments are being discovered in plastic surgery every day . While the best option for the patient is often a surgical treatment , there are many more non-invasive treatment options than there used to be .
How has the rise of the ‘ selfie ’ changed cosmetic / reconstructive surgery ?
With the selfie , people are more mindful of their appearance . This has resulted in more individuals seeking out cosmetic treatments to change the way they look , thus improving their confidence , and ultimately their self-esteem .
How do you feel about new treatments like CoolSculpting ® and Kybella ® that don ’ t require going under the knife ?
While these procedures aren ’ t right for every patient , it ’ s great that some people have the option to obtain their desired appearance without surgery .
What is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for women ? Men ?
Many of my female patients desire surgery to improve their appearance after having children which usually includes a tummy tuck , breast augmentation or liposuction . Most of my male patients desire improvements in facial aging with eyelid surgery being the most common .
How do you feel about being the premier plastic surgeon for Advanced Skincare MedCenter ?
I am very excited about being here . It ’ s a real privilege to be able to work with Advanced Skincare MedCenter as they share so many of my own philosophies . I feel very lucky to collaborate with such a great staff and wonderful patients .
What is the most rewarding part of your career ?
I absolutely love meeting new patients and helping them achieve their goals . Bringing them happiness is extremely fulfilling to me .
What are your hobbies ?
I spend most of my free time with my wife and my three children . I also like to watch / play sports and travel .
Do you have any secret talents ? If so , what are they ?
I was a pole vaulter in high school and cleared 14 feet as a senior .
