Wise Words from even Wiser People

MEMP Directors and Staff give words of advice for all MEM'ers!

I don't have any children but I have a dog, Zoe, that I treat like a child. Zoe ensures that I spend a little time outside each day. I especially like walking on trails in Duke Forest. My advice to students is to remember that everything you do is a choice that has opportunity costs and consequences. Thus, be sure to think strategically about how you spend your time each day.

Director

People that know me understand that I am somewhat risk averse. I do not like to take chances and I try to analyze the consequences if something were to go wrong. It often surprises people to learn that as an undergraduate I went skydiving. Yes, there were risks, but I learned how to land safely and I had a backup parachute in case the primary parachute did not open. Ultimately, I determined that the risks had been minimized and I stepped out of the plane to start my free-fall. As you start your career, the path ahead may seem daunting and you face many unknowns that may be terrifying. Remember that you have prepared yourself through your education. It is now the time to take a leap of faith for whatever comes next. I wish you all the best in your next adventure.
