International Students and the Job Search
Looking for a job is rarely easy for anyone, but it can be especially confusing for you as the international student.
Two things to consider as you begin your full-time job search are to gain a deeper understanding of U.S.
employment regulation standards and the resources used by American employers to find candidates.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Regulations
As an international student, you should only obtain employment-related information from an experienced
immigration attorney or your campus USCIS representative. Visit the USCIS website for helpful information
regarding working in the United States. Next, be sure to contact CMU’s Office of International Education once
you have decided to remain in the United States to work. Making an appointment with a representative will help
you understand and discuss regulations, strategies for employment, and any costs associated with working in
the United States.
Importance of Skills and Career Field
Be sure to find out if your degree and skill sets are currently in demand in the U.S. job market. You can learn
about your targeted career field by talking to professors, reading industry publications, attending workshops
and regional conferences, and talking with your career coach. Your job search will be easier with an advanced
degree, highly marketable skills, and extensive experience in your field.
Role of Employers
It is the employer’s sole responsibility to find the right people to fill open positions, and they look for candidates
in a variety of ways. Begin networking with employers and finding positions through college recruiting, campus
and community job fairs, Internet job postings, resume searches via national online searches, employee referrals,
regional and national conferences, and employment agencies.

technical skills. Be sure to utilize CMU’s campus resources to help you in your next steps with your career development
and future goals. Other resources include:

PAVE is a support program that connects incoming student veterans with student veterans already on campus
in order to help them navigate college life, identify challenges, refer them to appropriate resources, and provide
ongoing support to their academic and personal adventures. Visit www.paveoncampus.org to find out more.
