PVD Condition Center Now Live on
CardioSmart.org
ACC’s patient resource website, CardioSmart.org, has
launched a new condition center on peripheral vascular
disease (PVD), aimed at helping patients understand their
condition and provide them with the resources they need
to maintain their heart health. Clinicians are encouraged to
direct their patients to the condition center for information
such as a patient-focused overview of peripheral arterial
disease (PAD), questions to ask physicians, and related
fact sheets on PAD and walking for exercise. Visit the PVD
Condition Center on CardioSmart.org/PVD.

Certified Patient Case
AnticoagEvaluator App
The AnticoagEvaluator is an easy and fast
tool for clinicians to use when assessing
stroke and bleeding risk, as well as the
benefits and risks of antithrombotic therapy in patients with non-valvular chronic
atrial fibrillation. The app synthesizes
clinical trial data for antithrombotic therapy
options and uses this data in combination
with individual patient characteristics to
calculate individualized annual risk of ischemic stroke and thromboembolism with a
concurrent annual risk of major bleed. The
app is currently available for use on iPad,
iPhone, Android, and tablet.
A 44-year-old man presents with a 3-month history of
worsening dyspnea on exertion and orthopnea. His body
mass index is 36 kg/m2 and he has obstructive sleep apnea, for which he uses a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine during sleep. Physical exam reveals
a blood pressure of 102/78 mm Hg, an irregular rhythm
with a heart rate ranging from 105 to 143 bpm, a grade 4/6
systolic murmur, and bibasilar rales. What would you do?
