CT: Tell me about the CSMFO?
CSMFO: The California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO) is a 501c6 not-for-profit professional trade association. The purpose of the organization is to provide networking and educational opportunities to local government finance officials. CSMFO has over 2000 municipal and commercial members from throughout the state.
CT: What are the CSMFO’s goals you are currently working towards in the next 1-3 years?
CSMFO: CSMFO conducts a planning session every year; 2016 is the end of a three-year plan. We’ll be meeting in September to develop a new long-term plan, and then we will meet annually after that to update and refresh the goals.
In the past three years, CSMFO has had goals related to membership, education and leadership. As the overall mission of the organization hasn’t changed, I anticipate a similar trend for the next three-year plan; what will change are the individual action steps to get there.
CT: How will you get there?
CSMFO: CSMFO has an impressive network of dedicated volunteers. Literally, over 100 individuals every year in various capacities come together to help move CSMFO forward. I have worked with dozens of non-profit boards of directors over my nearly 20 years of experience in association management, and I’ve never seen a group of volunteer leaders as singularly focused on the good of the organization. It makes it easy and worthwhile, supporting them the way I do.
CT: How are you helping members achieve compliance with OMB guidelines?
CSMFO: At our 2016 conference in Anaheim, there was a session dedicated to this topic titled, “Federal Award Management: Aligning Grant Accounting Best Practices to Increased Federal OMB Uniform Guidance Restrictions.”
