Water-wise advice for business

The 2016 drought in South Africa has seen us all take a harder look at how we use water . While the recurrence of drought is a recognised weather pattern here , growing populations are putting increased pressure on water resources . “ We need to invest in water security now ,” says Arshad Osman of Arctic Amanzi , a company that bottles branded water for corporates across South Africa . Businesses use a lot of water . Whether this is in production processes , for use by staff members , or for simply keeping gardens at business premises looking good , water is an essential part of running a business . For many , when the water stops , production is soon affected . While many businesses here have responded admirably to the crisis by installing rainwater tanks and the like , Osman says there are still many other ways to reduce usage . 1 . Educate your employees and customers . Raising staff awareness is one of the most effective and sustainable ways to realise water savings 2 . Do a water audit . Keep track of water usage . Monthly water readings will help keep track of seasonal usage patterns , while measuring while water is flowing , as well as when it is not flowing , will help identify any leaks . 3 . Fix leaks . Dripping taps and leaking toilets alone can waste thousands of litres of water a month . A single dripping tap leaks as much as a kilolitre in a month . Replacing a simple washer could save you a lot of money over a financial year . 4 . Replace equipment that wastes water . You can cut your water usage from taps in half by just installing low-flow water aerators , while dual-flush toilets and water-efficient urinals will realise big savings ( toilets and urinals account for a full third of water usage in buildings ). 5 . Design water-efficient landscaping . It may be nice to have a rainforest garden greeting visitors to your company , but if you ’ re based in a water-scarce area you may be sending the wrong message . 6 . Ensure that top management buy in to the water-saving plan . All staff should be involved in water-savings measures . This includes top management . As with most initiatives in business , unless there is buy-in from the top in terms of time , funds and visible support , the chances of success are limited . Osman also suggests that big companies and corporates consider the following :
• Have cool water on hand for customers and staff . This will reduce the need to run a tap each time they need to pour a glass of water .
• Install instant heating systems in staff kitchens so that taps don ’ t need to run while the water heats up .
• Never install a water-to-air heat pump or airconditioning system . Opt for equally efficient air-to-air models .
