Daymed Private Hospital , located in the Raisethorpe area of Pietermaritzburg , was opened in 2004 with just 12 staff members and 26 beds . In 2013 , a three-phase expansion began , first with the addition of new wards , followed by a new ICU ( intensive care unit ) and finally a renovation of the entire hospital , including rebranding . Today the hospital employs 170 people and counts a total of 127 beds , housed in a fourstorey-high hospital of 9 000 square metres in size . The driver behind this impressive growth , says Daymed Managing Director Dr Navind Dayanand , has been bed shortages in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and a growing demand for cost-effective healthcare that is provided in a modern hospital . “ Dr Dayanand has a vision to grow the hospital ,” said Mrs Neru Dayanand , Daymed ’ s financial director . “ His vision is to provide an ultra-modern healthcare facility here .” Daymed Hospital specialises in endoscopic surgery ; ear , nose and throat ( ENT ) procedures , such as tonsillectomies and sinus washouts ; gastroenterology ; general surgery ; internal medicine ; new obstetrics ; gynaecology ; oncology ; orthopaedic surgery ; and paediatrics . State-of-the-art ventilators are used in the ICU , as well as electric ripple mattresses for the prevention of bedsores . The hospital ’ s operating theatre has the latest anaesthetic machine and its equipment caters for intricate , delicate surgeries , including a C-arm for orthopaedic surgery . The latest ENT and eye microscopes — unique operating theatre equipment that
combines two different functions in one machine — are used on site too .
