COVER ARTIST

The cover photo of this edition of Capital is by local photographer Stephen Pryke and depicts the iconic Zulu-lulu Dlamini figurines , one of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands art world ’ s great success stories . Pryke has been a keen photographer from his early years . Like many resident KZN Midlands artists , however , he paid his dues working for large corporations in big cities . With a BA ( Hons ) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand , Pryke worked in sales , marketing and personnel before taking up professional photographic work 12 years ago . Today , his photography is on display in his gallery in Hilton and at other galleries in the KZN Midlands , and has been featured annually at Art in the Park in Pietermaritzburg for the past 13 years . Pryke has a large image library containing scenic , nature and tourism pictures , as well as other photographs that reflect life in Southern Africa . He supplies material from his image library to tourism organisations , and takes on photographic commissions for hospitality and commercial organisations . He also writes articles for magazines and newspapers , and is presently working on a coffee table book . This KZN Midlands-based photographer has a passion for nature and scenic beauty , and in 1999 he was awarded his Associateship of the Photographic Society of Southern Africa . Today , he says , he spends a lot of his time tutoring upand-coming photographers , both young and old . To contact Stephen Pryke , by appointment , phone 033 343 2088 or 082 681 6126 .
