PEOPLE
What is it like to work in marketing
communications at Nando’s? What does
your job entail?
Working in Nando’s marketing is fast
paced, exciting and no one day is the
same. We constantly challenge ourselves
to be relevant in a dynamic South African
environment while meeting the business
objectives of selling the best-tasting
chicken in the world. My job entails
leading and managing the integration
of the marketing communications team.
Advertising, digital, internal events and
communication fall under my portfolio
and I need to ensure that there are the
correct synergies. I am fortunate in that
I work with a team of specialists in the
communication field who can focus on
operational excellence, which provides
me with the space to lead the marketing
communication agenda and strategy of
Nando’s.
How involved are you in the development
of the renowned Nando’s ads?
My role is to support the advertising
manager in the development of the ads.
I also form a part of the approval process
and ensure that the communication
is integrated across all our advertising
platforms. We employ a number of agencies
who are responsible for executing our
various communications and marketing
requirements based on our brief to them.
All of these agencies, as well as the internal
members of Nando’s communications and
marketing team, are encouraged to keep
an eye open for opportunities that might
lend themselves to our particular brand of
humour.
Is the company’s culture as “fun” as the
marketing material you put out?
It is super fun and not often is one given
the opportunity to work on a brand that
has a humorous tone, so the team has
to be reflective of that. We also have a
wonderfully creative and inspiring office
space!
What do you think makes Nando’s
different? Can you comment on the
management style of the company, its
staff, or anything else that differentiates
it from other similar companies? Is there
a certain type of employee Nando’s looks
for?
Nando’s founders are still very involved
in the business and this brings the fire
and soul that was there when the first
Nando’s was started over 27 years ago
