So the markets remain hot and the tone of the conversation decidedly cool indicating that we should be ok. And honestly I think we will be, but let’s at least dig around in the worst case scenarios for a minute. The loitering specters of the Trump administrating are his cabinet appointments. The “it will never happen” terror of a Chris Christie appointment to Attorney General did not stop being terrifying just because now, it might actually happen. And Giuliani as alternate is not a whole lot better. Would Christie be empowered to shut down legal cannabis in well regulated states. That seems unlikely but it does seem feasible that the DEA will continue to be deployed to enforce the Schedule One Controlled Substances Act and that otherwise law abiding companies will continue to be raided and their assets seized as has happened in all legal states, but particularly in California. I don’t think Trump cares about cannabis but I think Mike Pence probably does and I think the real question is who will Trump listen to, bearing in mind that he has no idea what he is doing.
I am not ready to totally relax, but I am writing this from the Marijuana Business Conference in Las Vegas with close to 10,000 mostly men in suits in attendance. It’s not for everyone, but there is no denying the massive energy and interest around this industry. I took the opportunity to ask a lot of industry professionals and some policy experts what their thoughts were on the Trump for Cannabis question and a good portion of them feel that cannabis may actually do better under a Trump administration because it is going to be so far down on his list of things to do and he is not as captive to big pharma, food and agriculture as a Hillary administrating might be. I think that is a fair point, but the truth is, I just don’t know what is going to happen and I don’t think anyone does.
