SING ! Toronto Vocal Arts Festival Returns Vocal music will take centre stage at SING ! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival , which is happening from May 11-28 , 2017 . The festival highlights the best Canadian and international vocal talent with ticketed and free performances and workshops at the St . Lawrence Centre for the Arts , The Distillery Historic District , and many other downtown venues .
Highlights for this sixth edition include 250 amateur and professional singers from all over the world who will attempt to break the Guinness World Records for most nationalities singing a national / regional anthem simultaneously and the most nationalities in a simultaneous popular music sing-along . As well , there will be free concerts , a student vocal workshop program , and performances from acclaimed vocal groups like New York Voices and Blue Jupiter .

SOCAN is basically begging songwriters and composers to collect their live performance royalties – money that ’ s owed to its members ( and potential members ) that hasn ’ t been collected . Check out our Indie Insider story on the topic on Pg . 10 . In the meantime , we polled artists across the country to see why this might be . Here are the results :

57 % have never collected live performance royalties

SOCAN says a surprising number of its songwriter members don ’ t collect their live performance royalties . Why do you think this is ?

Just 54 % of all respondents know SOCAN pays out live performance royalties , while 36 % say they ’ re “ vaguely aware of it ”

Only 26 % say they understand the criteria and process for collecting live performance royalties

69 % of respondents are active SOCAN members .

Of those :

28 % say they currently have unpaid live performance royalties sitting with SOCAN …

and 41 % don ’ t know if they do or not

They don ’ t know what they need to do to collect those royalties –

53 %

They don ’ t know those royalties exist –

27 %

They think the amount of money available isn ’ t worth the time & effort to submit their info to SOCAN –
