Music Summit brought together all facets of the music industry , including labels , publishers , artists , tech companies , managers , agents , promoters , media , and more .
This year , the conference featured keynote presentations and Q & As with pioneering Canadian label executive Denise Donlon , Big Machine Records Founder Scott Borchetta , ole CEO Robert Ott , and others .
As in recent years , many conference panels and discussions were dominated by talk of streaming royalties , how those growing revenues should be divided , and what the economics of streaming mean for the music industry going forward . How music fits into the burgeoning business of virtual reality was also a major topic of conversation . As well , there were many musician-oriented panels on sync licencing , getting booked for festivals , creating an online video presence , and more .
Among the delegates , there appeared to be growing recognition that CMW ’ s stature and significance within the international music industry is growing . “ You go to [ a conference ] in England or one in the United States and they can be zoos ,” music industry expert Alan Cross told Canadian Musician . “ But if you come to Canadian Music Week , it ’ s small , compact , and relatively low-pressure compared to some of these other events because you can just walk up to somebody and talk to them … Here , it ’ s a zoo when it comes to the music because you ’ ve got over 1,000 bands playing over six days at 60 venues , and that ’ s one part of it , but if you want to get business done , it ’ s all in one hotel and everybody ’ s going to the same dinners and luncheons and it ’ s very easy to mix .”

CIMA Launches Canadian Independent Music Charts
The Canadian Independent Music Association ( CIMA ), in partnership with BuzzAngle Music , has launched two new Canadian independent-only music charts , the CIMA 20 and CIMA 40 . The two charts are made available every Tuesday and represent the market success of independent artists in Canada by ranking their current album packages encompassing music sales , downloads , and streams .
The CIMA 20 chart is the top 20 Canadian independent artists ’ album packages , while the CIMA 40 chart is the top 40 Canadian and international independent artists ’ album packages in the Canadian market . Using BuzzAngle Music ’ s consumption analytics , these new charts will offer data at a more granular level and in a timelier manner than the most commonly used measurements of sales and streaming available up until this point , according to CIMA . Universal Music Canada Announces New HQ & Creation Facility in Toronto
Universal Music Canada will move into a new headquarters in the Liberty Village neighbourhood of downtown Toronto in 2018 .
“ 80 Atlantic [ Ave .] will be the next phase of the growth and evolution of our city ’ s music community as we build greater resources and support for artists , enabling them to fully refine their craft at home rather than resorting to exporting it raw for others to find before bringing it to market ,” says the label ’ s President and CEO , Jeffrey Remedios .
In addition to office space for the label , the new facility will include recording , live performance , content creation , and fan-focused spaces , which will be open to independent artists .
