Lynn Robertson
Graphic Designer for Ayrshire College
What has been your involvement in the
new campus development? I’ve created
artwork for the glazing in the new campus
and will be designing wall graphics. The
Marketing team has also been involved
with creating the sub brands for the
commercial areas.
How does this project compare to
others you have been involved with?
The glazing manifestations have been
completely different to anything I’ve
worked on before. Attention to detail
is paramount, as every mark will be
magnified on the building. The pattern
glazing for Salt and Barrel was incredibly
intricate and involved.
It has been challenging to envisage the
graphics on a building which wasn’t yet
complete. It required several site visits and
artwork revisions as the project went on.
As well as promoting the Ayrshire College
branding on the building, I have to be
mindful the artwork complements the
building’s architecture, interior design, and
both the artificial and natural lighting.
There are a lot of new challenges. It
is a completely different discipline
from working on publications and
advertising.
I particularly enjoyed working on the
branding for our new salon - You. As
in-house designer, I spend most of my
time working with the existing College
brand, so it was lovely to help develop
a new brand from scratch. The hair
and beauty department were fantastic
to work with, they had a very clear
vision and understanding of their brand
personality, I can’t wait to see how it
develops once students begin to take
ownership of it.
Can you tell us about the creative
process? For example, how did you
come up ideas for the sub brands?
We came up with the brand ideas
collectively as a Marketing team
drawing on themes of heritage, growth
and literal representations.
