Violet Lin Tran is the woman behind The Violet Cake Shop , located in Toronto , Canada . Her cake resume boasts a number of roles and achievements , including Satin Ice Artist of Excellence , and Craftsy instructor .

Her ability to combine bright colours and textures with a host of different techniques gives her cakes a signature style that is easily recognised the world over . We caught up with Violet to gain an insight in to her creative process .
Tell us how you got in to cake decorating .
I pretty much fell into it . I had always been artistic as a child but never felt a calling to pursue anything art related .
I was never much of a baker or lover of desserts but I took up baking when I had my first child , as something to do with him to help create memories . I started watching baking shows after that and soon discovered cake decorating shows like Food Network Challenge . Then a few months into it , my husband ’ s 40th was approaching and I thought what better way to celebrate then with a custom cake ! But I could not find any place in my area that was making them at the time , so I set out to make one myself and started researching online . Once I started looking , I got so enamoured ( actually obsessed ) with what I discovered , that it just took off from there .
