ExxonMobil and SABIC are evaluating jointly building a plastics manufacturing facility along the U . S . Gulf Coast , and a potential site near Gregory is at the top of the list . The abundance of low cost U . S . natural gas , including resources from the nearby Eagle Ford shale , provides a unique opportunity to build this multi-billion dollar facility .

The proposed facility would produce materials used in the manufacture of clothing , plastic water bottles , plastic containers , packaging , agricultural film and building and construction materials . It would include an ethane steam cracker capable of producing 1.8 million tonnes of ethylene per year , which would feed a monoethylene glycol unit and two polyethylene units . Those units produce the materials that would be exported to international markets .
If the San Patricio site is ultimately selected , the local region stands to benefit in many ways . The creation of 600 direct jobs and about 3,500 indirect jobs , as well as the business and vendor services the project will source locally during construction and operations , will generate a powerful economic boost here in the Coastal Bend .
