Wilderness as an Idea
When one is in Alumnae Valley , it ’ s quiet . The campus recedes from consciousness and the mind wanders between land , water , sky , forest . The functionality of the Valley is not apparent but it is inherent to , and inseparable from , what gives it a sense of mystery and awe , spiritual refreshment , and identity . Design professionals can continue Stegner ’ s rallying cry , advocating for the importance of wilderness in its own right , using projects like Alumnae Valley to rebalance the scales between human development and natural systems and preserving the idea of wilderness in everyday life .
