FIRST JOB . FIRST PROJECT .
FIRST PARK .
One hundred years later , we ’ ve just marked the centennial of the establishment of the National Park Service ( NPS ) through Congress ’ s passing of the Organic Act ; it crowns a year-long celebration of this nation ’ s treasury of open space . Only 14 parks , 21 monuments , and 2 reservations strong when NPS leadership took hold , this legacy continues to evolve . It ’ s now a system of over 400 sites , and is as multifaceted as its 300 + million yearly visitors .
Happy Birthday , National Park Service .
The NPS outreach campaign has crossed through the complex layers of this country . A second century of park stewards is being introduced to local and regional open spaces ; long time park supporters are articulating the ways their own lives have been shaped by their park experiences . Deep and personal impacts .
Have you found your park ?
Three years ago , in collaboration with the return of our ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo to Massachusetts , ASLA premiered The Landscape Architect ’ s Guide to BOSTON . Highlighting 100 treasures found within 26 area neighborhoods , the Guide both maps and catalogues our rich diversity of local sites . As a membership organization , BSLA celebrates our local legacy — our 28 colleagues through whose eyes and words we are transported on a timeless journey through our own backyard .
Parks . Telling the Landscape Architect ’ s story . Telling the American story . A ( r ) evolution , indeed .
( Be serenaded by a version of Happy Birthday like no other at www . nps . gov .)
