The Arts Court at Shady Hill School Cambridge , Massachusetts
The Shady Hill School provides primary through middleschool education for approximately 500 students each year . Bounded by three new arts buildings at the northwestern corner of campus , the Arts Court is a ‘ quadrangle ’ that is designed to fit within the human-scale campus . The Arts Center , totaling about 11,700 square-feet of interior space across three buildings , provides new classrooms for painting and drawing , ceramics , jewelry , woodworking , music , and dance studios . Our team designed exterior workspaces that foster visibility between buildings and enable the courtyard to function as a genuine outdoor classroom .
Shady Hill School prides itself on its environmental awareness and its culture of open campus space . The design team ’ s goal was to take full advantage of the Arts Court ’ s context , both within the Shady Hill School village and the wetland landscape , in order to create an outdoor space that serves its students , faculty , and staff , as well as the local environment . The design not only demonstrates responsible stormwater mitigation , but also harnesses rainwater as a resource for site irrigation .
