Point State Park
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Point State Park, a 37-acre urban waterfront
park, originally designed as a state park by
Ralph Griswold and Charles M. Stotz between
1954-1974, presents considerable opportunities
for increased connections to contiguous river
open spaces and Pittsburgh’s urban center.
The first phase was a Master Plan (20012003) that identified the issues followed by 4
phases of construction between 2004-2013.
Phase 1 addressed the City Side of the park
and provided amenities for the many events
held in the park. Phase 2 addressed the under
planting in the woodlands. Phase 3 addressed
ADA accessibility to the water and added major
hardscape improvements on both the Allegheny
and Monongahela River edges including ramps,
stairs, and amphitheatre seating. Phase 4 was a
major rehabilitation of the Fountain Plaza. New
site furniture and a coordinated lighting system
were added throughout the park, including solar
lights along the waterfront which is prone to
flooding several times a year.
