Landscapes for Learning: 9 Outdoor Classrooms
Boston, Massachusetts
Developed under a partnership between the Boston
Schoolyard Initiative (BSI) and Boston Public Schools, these
nine outdoor classrooms together showcase a new design
model for integrating outdoor learning into the urban
schoolyard. The Landscape Architects designed a set of
parts, including both individual elements and larger spatial
strategies, that make up the outdoor classroom and enable
teaching and flexible use. They used this approach on nine
outdoor classroom projects, tailoring the design to each
particular school’s needs and the opportunities presented
by it’s schoolyard. In the resulting projects, unused and
often bleak areas of the schoolyard are transformed into
interactive, vibrant spaces. The design approach has been
adopted as a standard by BSI and has been used by other
designers on additional outdoor classroom sites.
