The Cornerstone Garden of St. Albans School in Washington, DC gracefully transforms what was an unused and poorly maintained portion of campus into a walled columbarium where the ashes of alumni, faculty, and staff can be interred and memorialized. The Cornerstone Garden recognizes the power of spiritual place by not only providing a sanctuary that commemorates the school’s deceased but also by creating a new vibrant garden space for the school community. The siting and design of the garden embrace the Little Sanctuary Chapel and reinforce views to the Washington National Cathedral in the near distance, thereby strengthening the link between the St. Albans campus and the Cathedral Close.
