Oberlin College Conservatory
Oberlin, Ohio
A new one-eighth mile long landscape
axis frames and reconfigures the former
backside of the school’s Conservatory
of Music, providing landscape context
and contents for the new Kohl Building
for Jazz Studies at Oberlin College. A
key urban design move, was to extend
an axis south from Tappan Square, the
historic center of the campus and Town.
The axis alternates from a simple green,
to a sculpted plaza, to a string of gardens,
all open to the public. A further series
of outdoor stairs, terraces, and gardens
extends onto the Building’s upper levels.
