So when and where should the landscape architect engage a conservator ?
In the very beginning ! Even as early as the request for proposals , the conservator can provide feedback and guidance in the planning stages , and as soon as an artist is contracted the conservator can collaborate and complete a pre-fabrication conservation report before artwork is made . In many instances , commissioning agencies have already required the artist to find a conservator and submit an art conservation review with long-term maintenance directions . For example , the Boston Arts Commission requires artists to work with a conservator to develop a maintenance plan and seek letters of support during design development , and provides a list of approved conservators . In the City of Cambridge , a conservator is provided to the landscape architect and the artist at the time of concept development .
If the project does not come with a conservator , one can be located through peer recommendation , or by contacting the American Institute of the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works in Washington , DC , ( online at www . conservation-us . org ) and requesting references for professional conservators working on outdoor art . Before contacting the conservator , materials information can be gathered to submit requests for consulting or specific advice . ( A sample intake form can be downloaded at http :// www . sculpturecare . com /#! prefab-reviews / c1poi0 .)
The conservator can answer questions on metal alloys , attachment methods to prevent galvanic corrosion , which high-performance paint system is best for varying substrates , and protective coatings that make graffiti removal easier . Conservators also assess the environment , both physical and social , and determine solutions for mitigation . Most conservators also have ongoing relationships with artists ’ studios and professional fabricators , and can connect projects to contractors and facilitate discussion .
Pre-Fabrication Conservation
Pre-Fabrication Conservation Reviews provide an exceptional opportunity to review an artist ’ s intent , materials choices , fabrication techniques , and installation methods , as well as establish a clear written long-term maintenance plan with cost estimates . The Pre-Fabrication Review also includes the artist ’ s and the commissioning agent ’ s discussions of expected maintenance and longevity . Pre-Fabrication Reviews should not be viewed as a way to “ judge ” the physical acceptability of a proposed artwork , but rather be seen as a way to inform all involved in the process , and be prepared for necessary maintenance .
Reviews are carried out for sculptures , public art integrated into buildings or other built environments , for paintings and murals , and electronic and timebased media art . Pre-Fabrication Conservation Reviews are carried out by a conservator and require collaboration with the artist , the landscape architect , the fabricator , the administrator , and often allied professionals such as structural or civil engineers . A Pre-Fabrication Review is the single most important preservation and long-term care document for a
