The Harvard Graduate School of Design student chapter of ASLA held several events during the academic year , including a lecture series and ASLA Advocate Day . In the fall of 2014 , the chapter ’ s Lunch Box Lecture Series included GSD alumnus Chih-Wei G . V . Chang on urban drainage ; Johan Paju on trends and movements in Scandinavian landscape architecture ; and GSD alumnus Toru Mitani discussing his works . During the spring of 2015 , past
ASLA Immediate Past President Mark Focht visited the GSD to discuss leadership and the profession with Harvard chapter members . The student chapter helped organize student involvement in LAAB ’ s accreditation renewal site visit to Harvard this spring . Additionally , many GSD students submitted applications for ASLA Design Awards in the spring , and in May the BSLA provided a jury that awarded ASLA Honor and Merit awards for cumulative achievement to a select group of graduating students . Plans for the upcoming year include hosting a diverse range of both educational and social events for students throughout the year .

As emerging professionals , it is important to use the examples of our peers and build upon them . We have tremendous leadership to build upon from last year ’ s UMass Chapter committee . The committee for the coming year plans to do our very best to build upon the provided foundation . We came early to the realization that we could make the UMass BSLA Chapter our own and greatly benefit the students . We look to increase membership in the Chapter this year . The UMass Chapter is lucky to have a diverse group of students — both graduate and undergraduates — with different backgrounds , unique thoughts , and ideas . As a Chapter we always look to find ways to get all students involved and to provide a forum to speak and make a difference . To do this , we have several events and contests planned throughout the year , including hosting social events within the BSLA . We are excited to launch a new , threeon-three basketball tournament designed to foster relationships among students while raising money for our Chapter . In many ways , we hope to raise money to lower the cost for our annual NYC Parks Tour , a fantastic learning and site-seeing experience led by our faculty .
As a student Chapter , it is our responsibility to educate our local Amherst community on the subject of Landscape Architecture . so we again will participate in Park ( ing ) Day as well as introducing a student-manned Earth Day kiosk . The kiosk would be set on the UMass campus to educate the community on our profession and how young emerging LA professionals can impact the future of our communities . An App is being developed by some of our students to keep students and members up to date on Chapter events and activities via their smartphones . Above all , we hope to set a good example that can be built upon after we graduate .
