BSLA Emerging Professionals

NINA CHASE , ASLA , EP COMMITTEE CHAIR DAVID BORDEN , EP EVENT PRODUCER
The BSLA Emerging Professionals ( EPs ) tackled this year head on with a calendar chock full of fresh events . The group has grown to over 300 members in the past three years , including newly-minted landscape architects and students . This year , the EPs hosted a number of great programs that turned traditional networking events on their head , including the Speed Studio Tour : Boston Edition and the Tactical Urbanism + The Lawn on D panel and site tour .
Piggy-backing on the success of the Speed Studio Tour : Cambridge Edition , the EPs took to the streets of Boston last fall and ambitiously toured three prominent landscape architecture firms in and around the Financial District in under 1.5 hours . The offices of Spurr , Crosby Schlessinger and Smallridge and CRJA-IBI Group graciously opened their doors , giving short presentations and office tours to the group . EPs at each firm coordinated presentations and tours , showcasing the offices ’ cultures , projects , and people .
This past June , the EPs hosted the Tactical Urbanism + the Lawn on D panel discussion and site tour . The Lawn on D has quickly become an exciting local example of a tactical urbanism approach to placemaking and development . The panel featured the landscape architect , urban designer , and programmer responsible for the Lawn on D in a discussion on the trend of tactical urbanism and how the temporary park became an overnight success . Commissioned by the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority , the Lawn on D was designed by Sasaki as the first phase of an urban design master plan for D Street that was completed by Sasaki and Utile . The panel was held at EP David Buckley Borden ’ s pop-up Hibernaculum installation at the Boston Design Center and followed by tours of the Lawn on D . The event was co-hosted by the Boston Society of Architect ’ s Emerging Professional Network ( BSA EPNet ).
The EPs hosted a number of additional events this past year , including a lecture by Baltimore-based public artist Graham Coreil-Allen , an LARE review session with Jason Miller , and a presentation by National Park Service landscape architect Charles Tracy . In February , the BSLA EPs co-hosted the Emerging Professional Winter Warmer with the BSA EPNet and other local EP groups . Coming up , the BSLA EPs will be co-hosting a happy hour at ABX with the BSA EPNet .
In addition , we ’ re excited to announce that beginning in the fall , Emily Milliman , Associate ASLA , will be taking over as Chair of the BSLA Emerging Professionals Committee . Emily has been an active participant within our group for several years and recently served as BSLA ’ s Scholarship Chair . we look forward to the new diverse range of both educational and social events she will bring to the table for the group .
We ’ re excited to continue to populate our EP calendar with new ideas . We hope you can join us at an event this season !
