Therapy Trail at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Charlestown , Massachusetts
The inclusive design of the therapy trail at the new Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital utilizes the total campus as a tool for rehabilitation . Unlike a typical healing garden , the therapy trail offers patients opportunities to improve their health through real life obstacles and challenges while remaining in a safe and controlled setting . The design includes varying walk surfaces and slopes ; a milestone walkway ; and elements used for physical and cognitive therapy . Being connected to Boston ’ s Harborwalk and overlooking the water , the trail is a place for both the physical and emotional sides of healing . Instead of rehabilitating indoors , patients have the opportunity to spend time outdoors , along Boston ’ s waterfront , interacting with the community , walking over garden pathways , buoyed by blue sky , lush plantings , and sea air .
