Newcastle urban regeneration

A strong development pipeline at Newcastle Science Central will create a new urban quarter
As one of the biggest urban regeneration projects of its kind in the UK , Newcastle Science Central is connecting and restoring previously run-down areas in the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne and creating a new urban quarter in the city centre .
Originally the Elswick colliery until the 1940s , then later the home of the Scottish and Newcastle Brewery , this site has been a key part of Newcastle ’ s industrial landscape for over 200 years .
There ’ s a strong pipeline of development planned for Science Central to include the Urban Sciences Building ( USB ), due to open in September 2016 , the Newcastle Laboratory which will begin construction in Spring 2017 , and a 750 seat Learning and Teaching Centre opening in September 2019 .
A partnership between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle Science Central secured a long-term investment plan from Legal & General . An initial investment of £ 65 million will accelerate completion of two further buildings that offer 20,000 square metres of space and will create around 2,000 jobs .
Partners have also successfully made the case for £ 15 million in Government funding for a new National Innovation Centre for Data . ■
