JaNET network researchers pay ONLY for what they use , scaling IT as and when they need to
Scalable virtual labs Conscious that research is made possible by multiple sources of public funding , Jisc Commercial offers a consumptive model for digital services to research organisations . This enables them to bid safely and plan more with the finances on offer instead of paying upfront for ICT . JaNET provides direct connection to flexible digital core ICT infrastructure including cloud services such as storage , virtual machines , backup and DR , allowing researchers to pay ONLY for what they use and to scale their IT needs as and when their initiative requires .

UCL case study Marilena Loizidou , Professor of Cancer Nanotechnology at University College London ( UCL ) shares her perspective on the JaNET network : “ Solutions for big data analysis in my field tend to be local , although all the final information can be uploaded or compared – or made available on open websites after publication . Moves towards local , collaborative access within and across research organisations in real time is welcomed and will inevitably speed up clinical and commercial outcomes .” In its simplest form , digital transformation can be achieved through the delivery of virtual desktop solutions to drive space and savings for organisations , allowing researchers to work flexibly but equally efficiently from home , alternative labs and universities globally . “ My department enjoys a truly flexible desktop environment through JaNET that has upped productivity ,” says Loizidou .
Digital opportunities Opportunities that come with digitally connected equipment can be overlooked in the pursuit of a research organisation ’ s main clinical / scientific objective . But Jisc Commercial has successfully developed new revenue streams for research teams by making expensive , under-used laboratory equipment at one lab remotely available to another lab through the JaNET network .
Fast , secure and latency free access to data and services , along with the ability to collaborate securely in the digital world is key to keeping the UK ’ s labs , and the UK research sector , relevant and open for business .
