By Senior Physiotherapist ( HIA ) Tania Dawson .
The HIA ward and physiotherapy department have helped raise more than $ 1,000 by sponsoring myself in the Great Lake Taupo .
The funding has enabled them to buy an Able M skate which links with a basic computer game to entice stroke patients to be more engaged with fun upper limb rehab .
For stroke patients , upper limb rehab is often a challenge in the inpatient setting where patient ’ s goals are based around getting up and getting out of hospital .
Upper limbs are often more challenging to manage due to being more vulnerable to injury and generally take a longer time for movement to return .
However evidence shows that regaining upper limb function has a significant impact on enabling independence for stroke patients in their own homes & communities . With this is mind , HIA staff are aiming to provide more opportunities for upper limb rehab in the early stages of stroke . The Able X and M game has been set up as a multi professional initiative with three physiotherapist assistants , two occupational assistants and two health care assistants have been trained up to use the ‘ Game ’ therefore rehab can be conducted regularly throughout the week by multiple people .
