This gave an indication of the strength of the tyre and was called the tyre’s Ply Rating (PR). As stronger materials were developed the number of layers (plies) could be reduced whilst maintaining the same integral strength of the tyre. The designation “PR” therefore does not indicate the actual number of layers (plies) in the tyre but, the number of layers originally required to give the desired load capacity/rating. When working with “PR” marked tyres, the actual manufacturers data must be used to determine the load capacity in kg (or pounds). SPEED INDEX Load Index / Speed Index LI = Load Index SI = Speed Index The Load and Speed Index will gradually replace the PR marking system. Contrary to the PR marking system, the LI and SI markings give accurate and precise information on the tyres load/speed capacity (independent of manufacture and dimension) as, the codes can be directly converted into values (Kgs & km/h). The tables give an overview of relevant LI and SI codes.
