on patients , their families and the society . As per the WHO Global TB Report – 2015 , the estimated number of MDR-TB cases in 2014 among notified pulmonary TB cases were 71,000 . MDR-TB patients are put on treatment for at least two years and are required to take approximately 12,150 tablets during the course of the treatment . The strong drugs lead to multiple side effects like vomiting , joint pain , severe gastrointestinal problems , deafness , depression and suicidal tendencies . Also , stigma and lack of social support are a major challenge in treatment completion and hence increased awareness of the disease can help in prevention , early detection , treatment and care .
HIRANANDANI HOSPITAL CEO ARRESTED IN KIDNEY RACKET
The posh Hiranandani hospital is on the radar of the police authorities in Mumbai after the preliminary investigation revealed the involvement of the top management in the kidney scam . In a major bust of kidney racket that was flourishing from the hospital premises , the hospital ' s CEO Dr Sujit Chatterjee , Medical Director Dr Anurag Naik and three other senior doctors , Mr Prakash Shetty , Mr Mukesh Shah and Mr Mukesh Shetye ( as per media reports ) were arrested . They have been accused of being involved in illegal trade and sale of kidneys .
The hospital has so far declined comments till the police investigation is completed . Meanwhile the official spokesperson for Hiranandani Group has reportedly told the news agencies that an internal probe is being conducted by the hospital to ascertain facts .
The racket was first reported on July 14 when few political activists , social workers alleged that the donors and recipients in one of the ongoing surgery at that time were fake . The issue had snowballed into a huge issue . In view of the strong protests and clear evidence , the Maharashtra Directorate of Health Services set up a committee of medical experts which found irregularities related to at least four kidney transplant cases at the hospital . Based on the probe report of the committee , the police arrested the five medicos of this 12 years old , 240-bed prestigious hospital , sending shockwaves in the state medical fraternity .
RESEARCH ON MANAGEMENT OF DIABETES THROUGH YOGA
Research in India has recognized diabetes as a psychosomatic disorder whose causative factors include sedentary habits , physical , emotional and mental stress . Many studies have confirmed that the practice of Yoga can rejuvenate the insulin producing cells in the pancreas in diabetes of both types .
Therefore , the Ministry of AYUSH has launched a campaign to mitigate diabetes through yoga . One of the components of the campaign is to support formal research work in the field through the Extra Mural route , on the application of yoga to manage diabetes and its complications .
To facilitate further research in the use of Yoga to combat diabetes and its effects , the Ministry of AYUSH proposes to initiate several programmes . One among them is to encourage formal research on Management of Diabetes Mellitus and its complications through Yoga . The Ministry has invited research proposals from organizations engaged in Research in Yogic Sciences / Practice , including Medical , Scientific and Research & Development Institutions , Universities / Institutional Departments having adequate infrastructure and technical expertise . Selected research proposals would be funded by the Ministry through the existing scheme of Extra Mural Research .
MAKE IN INDIA : BARC , SCTIMST TO JOINTLY DEVELOP INDIGENOUS DEEP BRAIN STIMULATOR
The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre ( BARC ) and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology ( SCTIMST ), Thiruvananthapuram , an institute of national importance under Department of Science and Technology , have agreed to join hands to develop ‘ Deep Brain Stimulator ’ ( DBS ).
DBS involves implanting electrodes within certain areas of brain and the regular electrical pulses generated by a pacemaker-like device placed under the skin in upper chest regulates the abnormal impulses of the brain . DBS is used in typical neurological conditions of Essential tremor , Parkinson ' s disease and Dystonia . The DBS consists of implanted pulse generator , electrodes and extension cables which interface with external Programmer module and wireless battery charger .

As per the Memorandum of Understanding signed between BARC and SCTMIST yesterday on August 11 , 2016 , BARC will develop the device as per specifications provided by SCTMIST and SCTMIST will be responsible for clinical trials , testing and qualification . Electronics Division , Reactor Control Division and Centre for Design and Manufacture of BARC will participate in the development of various subsystems . ALERE INC TO STRENGTHEN ITS PRESENCE IN APAC
Alere Medical , the Indian subsidiary for the world ’ s noted Point- Of-Care ( POC ) Diagnostics Company Alere Inc , has announced the launch of its integrated facility in India for manufacturing POC diagnostic products . The company intends to accelerate its export strategy in India , as part of an Asia-Pacific expansion plan , in order to meet the growing demand for rapid diagnostics in APAC Region . In sync with the ‘ Make In India ’ campaign , Alere Medical has invested Rs 150 crores to set up a manufacturing facility in the country . The Manesar facility will initially produce more than 150 million rapid diagnostic tests per year and will have the capacity to expand to 300 Mn test over time . The facility is spread across 180,000 sq . ft . and will immediately generate 300 new jobs .
