VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: TYLER PROCHNOW
On Saturday, April 30 the 3rd Annual Every Kid Needs a
Superhero 5K was put on by Carthage College to benefit
the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha. The first event was held
in 2013 with 175 runners and raised close to $2,000. The
number of participants has doubled each year since.
“It really started with the creation of the Health and
Wellness Program at Carthage. Dr. Woodward, President
of Carthage College, wanted a large community event at
the end of the year which ended up evolving into a 5K.
We love working with the BGCK and thought it would
be a great fit,” said Tyler Prochnow, Health & Wellness
Coordinator at Carthage. The group came up with a
theme and everything began falling into place. “We set
out to make a family friendly event to get people active
while giving back to the community. Everything we do is
centered around that. We want to make this a great event
families can do together while being active. I love to hear
that we are the first 5K people do as a family, or the only
5K they do as a family. We want to continue to make
every aspect of our race more accessible and overall
more fun than the year before. To grow from 175, to 550,
to now 800 participants in year 3 is such an amazing
blessing.” The community has been supportive with many
14
people commenting that they are interested in the event
because it helps the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha. “We
chose the BGCK for their impact on their students and the
community. Physical activity and recreation is so close
to my heart and was such a big part of my childhood;
to be able to give back to an organization that not only
advocates for physical activity but helps inspire children
in all aspects of their lives means a lot to me,” said
Tyler. The Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha is very grateful
to Carthage College, Tyler Prochnow and his staff for
organizing a great event to gather such great community
support of the mission of the Boys & Girls Club. Everyone
involved in the event is a Superhero for the youth in the
community.
