Eighth Grade Community Service Each year , eighth grade students are required to complete five hours of community service as part of their graduation requirement . Service hours can include in-school and out-ofschool opportunities from September through May . Students will work with the eighth grade assistant principal who will monitor student hours .
Environmental Club Students in Environmental Club learn about the benefits of recycling , plant care and importance of air quality . Students coordinate the recycling program and chart air quality throughout the building on a regular basis .
Intramural Program The Intramural program is offered on a weekly basis for grades five through eight . Students will participate in a variety of activities such as indoor soccer , basketball , volleyball , kickball , etc .
National Junior Honor Society The National Junior Honor Society is comprised of eighth grade students who exemplify the NJHS pillars of character , citizenship , service , leadership and scholarship . Students are invited to apply for membership to NJHS based on academic performance and commendable behavior throughout their years at Benjamin Franklin Middle School . Candidates must complete an application essay , and induction is determined by a faculty council . The BFMS chapter of the NJHS emphasizes the importance of service and leadership through various charitable projects that benefit our local and global communities .
N . B . A . Book Club N . B . A . is a book club for girls in grades 5 and 6 . N . B . A . uses the joy of reading to motivate thoughtful discussion on issues of importance to girls , while increasing selfesteem and self-empowerment . The girls read books that are pre-selected based upon their themes and the interests of the girls enrolled . Some possible themes include : girl empowerment , friendships , conflict resolution , body image , dating relationships , acceptance and self-esteem .
Power Boys POWER Boys is a partnership between Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Community Baptist Church of Englewood . POWER Boys uses a small discussion group format to assist 8 th grade boys in improving in the areas of attitude , behavior and / or academic achievement . Throughout the course of the group , students meet to discuss topics such as Positive Decision-Making , Leadership , Academic Achievement and Financial Literacy .
Student Council This elected panel is the student body ’ s duly-authorized liaison representative to the teachers and administration . Matters of interest and concern to the student population may be brought to this student advocacy group . In addition , the group sponsors various social and academic events .
