Even if I got no minutes on it I can still make an emergency call if have to. Handy that is, what? But I never heard tell of none of them punks again that night or the next night. I just puttered around and sipped a few brew and thought about how we never knows what we’re carrying around on the inside, thought about all the bullshit that you takes with you everywhere you goes and how it’s high time to lighten me load and stop living like a fuckin arsehole.

I got the call then, to go offshore, and right before I went for the boat I got one of them phone cards and left my number with the ex, you know, who bore me youngsters. Told her to pass the number on to ‘em, told her where I was working and living and when I’d be back on land again. So, you never know. Never know what shore leave is gonna heave at me next time around.

Joel Thomas Hynes, multi-talented man hailing from Newfoundland is responsible for 2005's award winning novel Down to the Dirt, as well as Right Away Monday (my personal favourite) and full length stage plays such as Say Nothing Saw Wood, The Devil You Don't Know, and Broken Accidents, amongst others.

Joel, an actor, also starred in the screen adaptation of his novel, Down to the Dirt. When described as multi-talented, it's no lie as he has forded such professions as musician, playwright, screenwriter, poet, director, author and father. An intuitive photographer, a collection of impressive photographs can be found on his Facebook page.

Numerous examples of Joel's work can be found in various places on the web.
