● Silver Creek Girls’ Swim and Dive has won the Conference Meet in February a couple years in a row. Here’s hoping the team wins again this year. Go Raptors! We Put the Die in Diving by Ashley Degen Four girls giggle on a pool deck. There was another joke among the many in this very close-knit community. The girls’ dive team at Silver Creek High School is among the best and biggest in the district. Junior Emma Lilly, sophomore Ally Smith, sophomore Ashley Degen, and newcomer freshman Kathy Weygandt take on many schools in the coming season. They are bound to go far. Last year, Ally, Emma, and Ashley placed in conference. This is bound to be a precursor for the year to come. With Kathy joining this year, the team is stronger than ever. Coach Shawn Greg makes sure of that: "The SCHS Dive Team brought back the talent from last year and added new talent. It should be an exciting year as this is the strongest the dive team has looked for the last five years." The girls’ team is expected to make state this year and help the swim team win it. Off the board is a completely different feel for the dive team. The entire team instantly transforms into a family of comedians. Since the dive team is so few, the girls really bond and become a family through laughter. Out of all the jokes, the most famous is, “We put the die in diving!” First coined by Ally, it was quickly taken up as the team’s slogan after many smacks and bruises. To add to this effect, Emma received an award last year at the swim banquet entitled: Don’t Jump Off a Cliff. In a year when every school team is placing within the top ten at state, the Silver Creek Girls’ Dive team is falling right into place.
