What made you decide to play bass?
My parents sent me to Catholic high school,
and they didn’t have an orchestra (I was a
cellist), so I started playing bass in the jazz
band and fell in love with it!
How/Where did you learn to play?
I grew up in the San Francisco bay area, and
I was classically trained on cello and piano.
When I picked up the bass, I taught myself.
I won a small scholarship to Berklee College
of Music my senior year of high school and
decided to get serious. I took some lessons
that summer so I could be better prepared for
music school. I stayed at Berklee for 3 years,
studying with Whit Browne.
Who are your musical inspirations, both
male and female?
Ron Carter, for sure; he has the best feel! I love
his groove. Sheryl Crow is a big inspiration.
I love her writing style, her music is so
completely unique, and she sings her ass off!!
As a bassist starting out, Les Claypool and Flea
were my heroes. I loved their fearlessness of
the bass. I loved the bassists who bridged the
funk, rock gap, guys like Robert Trujillo and
Trevor Dunn. Recently, my husband (also a
bass player) has gotten me into Pino Palladino,
I can’t say enough about him. Perfect.
