Bass Musician Magazine - SPECIAL August 2014 Female Bassist Issue | Page 128
Who are your musical inspirations, both
male and female?
I like to say I’m inspired by everyone. Aside
from the obvious bass guys – Jamerson,
McCartney, Entwistle, JPJ, Chuck Rainly, Levin,
Bernie Edwards, Anthony Jackson, Marcus
Miller, Geddy Lee, Carole Kaye, Nathan East,
Freddie Washington – Tim Lefebvre inspires
me tremendously. I love his fearlessness,
quirkiness and genuine spirit.
In an industry dominated by male
musicians, do you find that this hinders
or helps your opportunities?
It can either work for me or against me
depending on the situation, so I really don’t
think about it much.
What is your opinion of the image
of female bassists in today’s music
industry?
Female bassists are everywhere now, and I’m
not surprised.
What specific challenges do you face as
a female bassist? What do you feel are
the advantages?
Honestly, the main challenge I face is trying
to be a better musician. I don’t think being
a woman has anything to do with that, but I
do think that women have an advantage by
instinctively being more nurturing.
What is your advice on how to be taken
professionally in the music industry?
Always come prepared, have an open mind
and a positive attitude.
What do you wish someone had told you
when you were first getting started?
Try to avoid any situation that may be unhealthy
