This look is polished , sophisticated , gorgeous , and ( yes , I ’ m saying it ) flattering .
The shape of the dress flows away from Colleen ’ s body , creating movement rather than breaking her body up into chunks like the skirt and jacket look . The color is amazing , and the necklace draws attention to the most important part of any person : her face .
A woman that walked into a room wearing this beautiful blue dress would draw the best kind of attention . The wow , she ’ s gorgeous rather than the what the hell is she wearing kind of attention .
Over half of the way that we communicate is purely visual . The way we dress , hair , makeup , and body language . Whether or not you care what other people think , what they think about you does affect your life .
If plus size women and the body positivity movement really want to make lasting change , this girly , juvenile , infantile fashion has got to stop .
We need more plus size fashion that makes the most of women ’ s assets in a flattering way . More grown-up clothes in quality fabrics and flattering styles . Less lace and chiffon and girly ridiculousness .
If you want to change the world , you ’ ve got to get people to take you seriously . And outfits with frilly skirts and graphic tees are not going to get the job done .
I ’ m calling out the fashion industry . Fashion and design schools need more classes on how to design for variety of body shapes and sizes . Fashion houses need to start designing for more body shapes and sizes . Couture houses especially need to change . Women size 14 and up are buying more and more clothes and spending more and more money every year . It ’ s mind-boggling that the response to that has been frilly crap and plus size women are real women advertising .
The more that women dress in these ridiculous clothes and hate on women of other sizes , the less that changes . We won ’ t have any more options for gorgeous clothes in all sizes . We won ’ t see women of all sizes being taken seriously in mainstream media .
All we ’ ll have is a pile of glittery crap and no real societal change . And that is so not acceptable . So throw away your tutus and find some nice skinny jeans and a top that fits well . Add a bright necklace or scarf that draws attention to your face .
Then go out and change the world for women everywhere .
